Design and construction of five elephant shade canopies and one giraffe canopy for the Los Angeles Zoo.
How the project came together.
URE developed concept designs and material specifications, coordinated with Zoo and City of Los Angeles staff, and constructed foundations, steel columns and timber canopy roofs.
Canopy placement was studied in relation to the sun to increase useful shade during hot summer months. The field plan also accounted for unknown underground obstructions, permitting and the forces the elephant-area structures would need to withstand.
Following design and permitting, URE located potential underground conflicts, excavated and placed concrete foundations, erected fabricated steel columns and completed the timber roof structures.
